A Brazilian teacher in Finland - Part 01

Hi, my name is Damione Damito and I am teacher at the Federal Institute of São Paulo. I'm having the opportunity to have a period of studies abroad and this blog regularly will record my learnings and insights about the customs and Finnish culture and others countries where I’ll.

After a long wait to see the result of a edital issued by SETEC in partnership with CNPq, I knew that my project had been selected and would receive a scholarship in Finland.

Now, why Finland?

This country located north of Europe has repeatedly achieved excellent scores in international assessments that measure the quality of education, which makes the Finnish education system one of the best in the world.

Watching these good results, along with over 34 teachers of federal technological institutions, was sent to HAMK - Hame University of Applied Science in the city of Hämeenlina located approximately 100 kilometers from the capital, Helsinki.

Upon arrival I was surprised by -3ºC, this temperature is not found in our winter but not enough to scare actually as everywhere is air conditioned and the clothes are appropriate to cold in the negative range. We do not suffer the same so that we suffer in our winter in Brazil where we got to 10 ° C (which is heat here lol).

One of the things that caught my attention since I got is the trust that exists between citizens, businesses and government as an example I can cite the absence of any turnstile or counter in the airport arrivals to, in person, inform my entry or confirm my personal data . I know they have the records that are shared by the European Union because I checkin in other countries but this caught my attention.

Another very interesting cultural feature for me, Brazilian, is the culture of "do-it-yourself", where even in supermarkets there is a possibility you even register their purchases and pay them with Card. The same applies to gas stations where you even fuels your car.

Um professor brasileiro na Finlândia – Parte 01

Oi, meu nome é Damione Damito e sou professor do Instituto Federal de São Paulo. Estou tendo a oportunidade de ter um período de estudos fora do Brasil e nesse blog registrarei periodicamente meus aprendizados e percepções acerca dos costumes e cultura finlandesa e dos países por onde passarei.

Logo após uma longa espera para saber o resultado de um edital lançado pela SETEC em parceria com CNPq, soube que meu projeto havia sido selecionado e que receberia uma bolsa de estudos na Finlândia.

Agora, porquê a Finlândia?

Esse país localizado ao norte da europa tem repetidamente conseguido excelentes notas em avaliações internacionais que medem a qualidade de ensino, o que faz do sistema educacional finlândes um dos melhores do mundo.

Observando esses bons resultados, juntamente com mais 34 professores de instituições tecnológicas federais, fui enviado para HAMK – Hame Universidade de Ciência Aplicada na cidade de Hämeenlina localizada aproximadamente a 100 kilometros da capital do país, Helsinque.

Logo ao chegar fui surpreendido com -3ºC, temperatura que não é encontrada no nosso inverno porém não chega a assustar, na verdade, como todos os lugares são climatizados e as roupas são adequadas ao frio na escala negativa não sofremos o mesmo tanto que sofremos no nosso inverno no Brasil onde chegamos até 10ºC (o que é calor por aqui lol).

Uma das coisas que mais tem me chamado atenção desde que cheguei é a confiança que existe entre os cidadãos, empresas e governo como exemplo posso citar a ausência de qualquer catraca ou balcão no desembarque do aeroporto para, presencialmente, informar minha entrada ou confirmar meus dados pessoais, sei que eles têm os registros que são compartilhados pela União Européia pois fiz checkin em outros países porém isso me chamou a atenção.

Outra característica cultural muito interessante para mim brasileiro é a cultura do “faça-você-mesmo”, onde até mesmo nos supermercados existe a possibilidade de você mesmo registrar suas compras e paga-las com cartão. O mesmo acontece nos postos de combustível onde você mesmo abastece seu carro.
